Fearlessly Talented

I'm seriously convinced this young lady, Michelle, has no fear...or more precisely...she knows how to put fear aside, take life by the horns, and show the world there is no such thing as girls and boys boundaries.  If the truth be told, this young lady has schooled her share of boys in showing them where the real boundaries of mind-over-matter live while shouting "Catch Me If You Can" in the process!

Michelle and her older brother's raising by her father and mother was of the ski-bum life (though one would be hard pressed to believe any part of the "bum"

A major raising of Michelle and her older brother by their father and mother is in the philosophy of the ski-bum...though one would be hard pressed to believe any of the bum part when witnessing the highly successful business their mom and dad run and the work ethic they and their kids exhibit!

Nay, it's more that they have not only raised their kids on how to work hard but then how to play hard in nature's back yard and to fearlessly enjoy every moment they are lucky enough to be in it...

Beauty, Positivity, and Soul

Ok...I admit...when I was typing out the title of this blog, the word "positivity" got the red squiggly underline...

The passionate artist in me said..."So?..the word describes this high school senior perfectly!"

...While the anal-retentive ex-software developer in me cringed in disdain at the offensiveness of made up words...

As luck would have it, the passionate artist was able to give the raspberry to its counterpart personality as dictionary.com proved the word to be valid!

Well!...Enough about me and my dueling self.... Meet Jaquelynn.

When I met with Jaquelynn and her mom, dad, and sweet little sister (though her sister may now want to kick me in the shins for stating her as such), I could just feel the "positivity" in the room.

Fellowship-Nature-Food..and a Viola!

Meet Irene. Irene is the eldest daughter of a family we adore. Where, good food, laughs, and fellowship are always to be found when we have the blessed opportunity to get together.

Irene is one of the beautiful paradoxes of human nature where the yen and the yang of personality and talent are in perfect harmony. She's intensely smart and talented and takes her education very seriously. And she's compassionately nice and welcoming to all she meets.

She comes from a family line of music that bears evidence from the moment your ears are treated to the passionate sounds that envelope you when you hear her play her viola...

As we sat around the dinner table at her parents house, sipping coffee and developing her creative plan for the photo shoot, it also became quite apparent that this family is full of fabulous, fun, and sometimes, scary stories!  I felt like I should have been taking notes in anticipation of preparing a movie script!  What fun.

Latest Photography & Motion Showreel

(Music Information: Another World via FirstCom Music  Library UTS006, Track 2)

I decided to create a new showreel that combines both my photography and motion work.  So much of my passion in capturing personality, style, and grace is embodied in both.  I feel so lucky to be in a time, technologically, where we can create both with so much more than in years past. DSLRs that create gorgeous photos AND motion. 4k Video cameras that allow us to create beautiful stories in gorgeous glory.

In the very beginning I started out professionally with the then hot Nikon D70 for stills and the fabulous Sony DVCAM PD-170 and a MiniDV Sony DCR-TRV950 (which I still have!).

Snow Queen Filming Update and Other Stuff

Hi everyone.
Just a quick update on what's been going on.

We have been working hard on summer filming for the Snow Queen: Daughters of the Snow film.  Our summer filming has been capturing the back stories and off-season interests of our cast.

We have also been laying down voice over tracks of the cast for the new trailer we are creating for our final push in fundraising.  As I write this I am reminded of a very cool story of our voice over work.

I had Amy, Tiffany, Petra over to the studio to record parts of the new trailer's script.  While the ladies reviewed the script, it became quite obvious that something needed to be said by Amy.  I asked Amy what was on her mind.  One thing I like about collaboration, is that if the group feels comfortable, and ego levels are low, much better collaboration comes forth.  And this day was truly a day that this truism came to fruition...

Amy was gentle, yet blunt....

Mental Illness Awareness: You Are Not Alone

A year ago, March, we were told our son had Paranoid Schizophrenia.  Two words that would explain so much, yet throw us into a world of fear and uncertainty...through NAMI, we found we were not alone....

This is a video I have put together from our participation in the recent NAMI Walks fundraising event.  For those curious, it was all shot on my Nikon D800.  The black and white segments were shot with a custom profile setting I created in camera.  Music licensing provided by First Com Music.

Visit http://www.nami.org to find out more of how this wonderful organization advocates and helps those suffering from mental illness in addition to supporting families, friends, and caregivers of those suffering from mental illness.

Mental Illness Awareness Walk

In March of 2013, our son was diagnosed with a mental illness...

Needless to say, our world was a little scary and uncertain during that time and the months to come.
Thankfully, we were not alone....
Through my wife's efforts, she found an organization that helps those with mental illness along with support for family and loved ones supporting those with mental illness.  The organization is NAMI - National Alliance on Mental Illness.

And I love their tagline: Mental Illness Affects Everyone.

In the first part of May, we participated in the local NAMIWalks fundraising effort.  Diane totally kicked butt in raising most of our team's donations.  Oh, and our team name is "Forever Young".  Yeah, chalk that up to Diane's creativity, not mine!

If you would like more information on NAMI, please visit their website at www.nami.org.  For information on the NAMIWalks, go to www.namiwalks.org.

AND finally, you can visit our team fundraising page at  http://namiwalks.nami.org/foreveryoung2014.

May is Mental Illness Awareness month, so if you would like to donate to NAMI, you can still donate at our page!  The money goes straight to NAMI, and I believe it is tax deductible.

And of course, a few pictures from our walk that I took...what?...you didn't think I wasn present without the camera?

Spring Break!

Sometimes the spontaneous trips are the most pleasant!  On the Thursday before my daughter's spring break, we were all in the car talking about what we were going to do for Spring Break.  And in almost perfect unison, we all yelled "San Diego!".
So the next day, we packed up the car, and split for San Diego.  Straight through..14 hours.

It was worth it.  We had a very relaxing and joyous time.  And of course, I shot most everything in black and white...if you haven't heard, I'm a black and white junkie....and as usual, my wife and daughter were gracious in allowing me to take my photos!

We took I-40 to Los Angeles.  And along the stretch around Palm Springs, they have A LOT of windmill farms.  I put the patience of my wife and daughter to test, and parked the car in a gas station parking lot, and walked over an overpass and put my camera on the railing and got this shot.

Snow Queen Filming Update

If you have not heard, it has been one of the WORST snow seasons in Norther New Mexico's recent history.  And we've all been sweating bullets with the lack of opportunity to film!

However, we have been able to get some filming in with Tiffany's slope style competitions and some training she did up in Monarch.

And FINALLY, this past Saturday, we had a winter wonderland snowfall at Taos Ski Valley.
©2014 Michael P. Young, LLC. All rights reserved

It was a whirlwind effort to bring everyone together for the filming, but we all knew it was going to be only one of few remaining opportunities this winter season for such gorgeous snow conditions and everyone being in one place.  Thanks to Adriana at Taos Ski Valley....she made it happen and gracefully dealt with my shotgun scatter of logistics planning to get everyone gathered and the cameras rolling!

We also had a very nice surprise in that Adriana hooked us up with a very cool photographer, David Cox, to shoot with us...his insight on the mountain and locations was indispensable and much appreciated!

While it was not a blue sky day, I actually couldn't have been more thrilled with the mystique of a foggy/snowy winter snowscape for Snow Queen goth!

Hayley(hayley.michaelpyoung.com)
Well, it's our final day of the ♪12 Days of Fabulous of 2013 ♪.  We end this fabulous journey with Hayley.  When we sat down with Hayley and her mom for the creative planning session, it became apparent that Hayley and her mom wished for a photoshoot at a beach setting.  Hayley was born in California, and was very fond of the beaches as a young child.  So, naturally, they really wanted a photoshoot themed around a beach setting.  It goes without saying, that New Mexico is THE state with the lowest water to land ratio in the continental United States!  So as we started thinking about it, and schemed on the idea that maybe one of our lakes might suffice.

So a few days later, we all traveled up to Abiquiu lake to scout out the location.  It was a beautiful sunny day, and the lake was well received by our shining star of a subject.  We talked with the park rangers to make arrangements for the shoot and get the appropriate permits.

On the day of the shoot, the park ranger met us and informed us that a summer storm was brewing over the Jemez Mountains and was headed straight for the lake...we had maybe 45 minutes.  And in all honesty, I was delighted.  You see, clouds provide great dramatic backgrounds when lighting your subject a certain way.  And Mother Nature did not disappoint!

You may recognize Tiffany as one of our stars in our upcoming Snow Queen:Daughters of the Snow film.  In the film we want to build a story around each star and then, of course, showcase their beautiful and awesome talent in snowboarding or skiing.  Tiffany actively competes in snowboard racing and slopestyle events.  Over the next couple of months we will be filming her power and grace in these competitions.

Tiffany is a mom of 2 sweet children.  She is a fabulous artist too!  You will get to see the fruits of her labor in the film as part of her background story.  But for now I want to share with you some snaps we took of the story of her motherhood.  These kids are happy, confident, caring kids...a true testament to their raising by a fabulous pair in their mom and dad.

Michelle
Michelle is one of the stars of our upcoming Snow Queen: Daughters of the Snow film!  The film is an inspirational documentary on female snowboarders and skiers.  And Michelle was a perfect fit for the film as she is a phenomenal skier AND snowboarder (check out her bio on the film's page!).  Her mother and father taught her and her brother the love for snow at early ages.  And while the word "ski bum" is often used within the household, there is no bum in the power and grace she exhibits in her skill in the snow.  She is also a very avid downhill mountain bike racing champ.  She is fearless and has a very cheerful personality.

For the film, I needed to do a photoshoot of each of the stars of the film.  And as luck would have it, we were blessed with a fresh layer of snow the day before shooting her portraits.  Her shots were magnificent and she knew exactly what to do.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the worst season so far for snow fall in New Mexico.  So we are all crossing our fingers for some new snow fall punches in January and February so we can begin filming!
