Clarity of the Mind's Eye Through a Family

Oh yes, I knew this family photo shoot was going to be cool, but not to the extent in which it came to pass...and oddly, a small whisper of a revelation days later brought clarity to the mind's eye of this elusive craft that consumes my passion...

The moment of clarity came a moment after the photo shoot where not but 5 seconds upon entering the van to depart from this fabulous photo shoot, my 14 year old daughter assistant stated with gusto "That was the funnest photo shoot ever!"

And it really was!  But the key to her statement is in the fact that this was the "funnest"...it made me realize that fun is a constant in all our photo shoots...this just happened to be one of the funnest....

OMG, Mr. Young, pleeease get to the point of this clarity of revelation...OK....here it is.....there is a huge difference between a portrait "sitting" session and a Creatively Planned Photo Shoot...we offered both..after this photo shoot and my daughters prognostic innocence, the word "offered" is the keyword here.

This passion of mine to capture the fire of those framed through the prismatic wonders of glass in front of a piece of silicon needs to have with it a CREATED EXPERIENCE that can only be executed through a creatively planned photo shoot...

When I met with Joanna (momma of this fantastic family) for the creative planning session, we talked at length about location options and getting to know her family.  I was mesmerized as we planned and schemed on locations and elements to make this a cool photo shoot....we were creating, thinking, planning....and in hindsight, I realize more than ever why this creative planning is so essential to delivering a photo shoot experience rather than just a series of images....

As we talked, we threw out into the creative ether several ideas on locations, but one location kept coming up in my head as being the perfect place for the personality and fire of this family....it was kinda far away, but oh my gosh, it felt so right for these guys...so I mentioned it...Ghost Ranch by Abiquiu Lake.  And Ghost Ranch it was....

It's funny, but I'll spend quite amount of brain power thinking about and building images in my head for a particular client after these creative planning sessions...just ask Diane and she will attest to many of my glassy eyed moments where I look like the kid in Christmas Story scheming on how to get his parents to get him that Red Rider BB gun with the compass in the stock for Christmas....In the end its all about creating a session that brings out the personality and fire of those who happen to come before my camera....AND I LOVE IT that way...

pssst....ALWAYS have the camera ready and tell your assistants to ALWAYS have the lighting directed at the clients even when they think your not taking a shot...totally impromptu...
